I serve on numerous non-profit and government advisory boards: I typically serve on committees such as operations and policy committees. I have served in Director, Vice President, and President roles. I enjoy serving on operations strategy committees and community outreach committees. I’ve led the development and execution of numerous events and fundraisers. I find the work of serving on boards intellectually fascinating, a serious responsibility representing the interests of the stakeholders and a way I can be helpful to great Executive Directors  and leadership teams.

Each new year brings so much anticipation for the things to come and angst for the ones left undone. As I sit here, contemplating my goals for the new year, I am filled with expectation of complete transformation. A deep sense of longing for dreams in the distant future pulls on my heart and I look at the time hoping it passes quickly so that I just might stand a chance of achieving that which I see in my mind’s eye.

Each time, I tell myself, “This will be different”. “Surely, I will arrive.”

But with each strike of midnight, I realize, I have only stepped forward an inch.

Wisdom from within steps forward and proclaims. “I” can do one of two things: regress or progress. It is easy to do the former which becomes a self fulfilling prophecy as to the first fruits of what we know as inertia. We taste of sadness and depression’s core and spit out its seeds upon which more angst grow.

However, with the latter, one stands a chance to break free of the the inaction and find a sense of satisfaction-even if only one has moved a centimeter. Progress in all of its glory is in the mind of the beholder. Progress should not be deified and another’s should not be envied.

Your progress is yours no matter how much- embrace it. It is your creation. Be glad in it, and use it to motivate yourself to move forward just a millimeter next time. You’ll be surprised as just how much more you will create when you focus on the creation itself.
